TB testing on the farm
Bovine tuberculosis testing is a vital part of responsible cattle farming in Wales. Here is what it involves and why it matters for farms like ours in Llannefydd.
Life on a working Welsh farm follows the rhythms of the seasons — lambing, haymaking, hedge cutting, and caring for livestock. Among these essential routines is TB testing, an important part of keeping cattle healthy and protecting farms across Wales.
For guests staying with us in future, it's a reminder that beyond the peaceful views and star-filled skies, real farming life continues — and every task plays a role in safeguarding animal welfare and the wider rural community.
What is bovine TB testing?
Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a serious disease that affects cattle and other animals. To help control its spread, farms across Wales must carry out regular TB testing under national animal health regulations.
Testing helps to:
- Protect the health and welfare of cattle
- Safeguard local farms and wildlife
- Maintain food safety standards
- Support the rural economy
While it's a routine requirement, it is also a vital responsibility.
How the testing process works
TB testing is carried out by a qualified veterinarian and usually takes place over two visits.
During the initial test, each animal receives two small injections in the skin of the neck. These sites are carefully measured and recorded.
During a follow-up check 72 hours later, the vet returns to measure the injection sites and check for any reactions that might indicate exposure to TB.
Although the process is simple, handling cattle safely and calmly is essential — so the day requires preparation, patience, and teamwork.
Why it matters
Farming is about stewardship — caring for land, animals, and community. TB testing plays a crucial role in protecting herds across the region and supporting neighbouring farms.
Healthy livestock means:
- Strong local agriculture
- Safe and traceable food production
- Protection for future generations of farms
- A resilient countryside economy
