How calving nearly derailed our date night

Cows do not care if you have got plans. Here is the story of how calving season nearly derailed our rare evening off the farm — and why we would not have it any other way.

How calving nearly derailed our date night

There are two things you should know about dating a farmer: 1) plans are always tentative and 2) calving season doesn't care about your plans.

We were all set for a rare evening off the farm. A proper date night. Dinner booked, and tickets ready to watch The Shawshank Redemption at Theatr Clwyd. It felt like a small luxury in the middle of a busy season — a chance to step away, switch off, and just be us for a couple of hours.

And then… the cow started calving.

If you know, you know

One minute you're grabbing your coat, the next you're staring at a cow who has clearly decided now is the moment. Not earlier that day. Not later that night. Right now — just as you're about to leave.

So, plans changed. Fast.

Instead of heading straight out, we found ourselves bringing her in (easier said than done), assessing the situation, and realising this wasn't going to be a straightforward calving. That meant one thing — the farmer had to step in and pull the calf.

It's one of those moments that's hard to explain unless you've lived it. There's adrenaline, urgency, and total focus — because at the end of the day, the welfare of the animal comes first. Always.

The show must go on

Eventually, calf safely delivered (and a very relieved cow), we looked at each other — slightly covered in evidence of what we'd just been doing — and realised we were now very late.

Dinner reservation? Cancelled. Romantic pre-theatre meal? Not happening.

Instead, we made a quick pit stop at McDonald's — because sometimes farming life swaps candlelit dinners for burgers in the car. And honestly? It still felt like a win just to be continuing the night.

We somehow made it to Theatr Clwyd with only seconds to spare, rushing to our seats just as everything was about to begin. Slightly dishevelled, still mentally on the farm, but there and ready to finally switch off.

The reality of farming life

And that's the thing about being in a relationship with a farmer, especially during calving season. You learn very quickly that flexibility isn't optional — it's essential. Plans will change. Timings will slip. "Quick jobs" are never quick. And the farm will always come first.

But you also learn something else. That even in the chaos, you find ways to make it work. Whether that's swapping a restaurant for a drive-thru, or arriving at the theatre with seconds to spare, you still show up. Together.

Because date night might not always look how you imagined — but it definitely keeps things interesting. And let's be honest, it's a story you wouldn't get anywhere else.
