Autumn on the farm
As the long days of summer fade, the fields and woodlands around Plas Panton take on a new kind of beauty. Autumn is one of the most magical times to visit the North Wales countryside.
There's something special about autumn on the farm. As the long days of summer fade, the fields, hedgerows, and woodlands around us take on a new kind of beauty. The air turns crisp, the leaves shift into their fiery colours, and life on the farm slows into a gentler rhythm.
This year, autumn has arrived with a mixture of relief and challenge. The lack of rainfall over the summer left our fields parched, with grass struggling to grow. What would normally be lush pasture for the cows was dry and brittle, forcing us to dip into our winter silage stocks far earlier than planned. It's a reminder of how closely farming depends on the weather, and how quickly the seasons can shift from abundance to scarcity.
Nature's abundance
Even so, nature continues to put on a show. The hedgerows are heavy with berries, the apple and plum trees are full to bursting — perfect for warm crumbles or a bit of homemade gin or jam.
Preparing for winter
As the animals grow thicker coats, we turn our attention to preparing the farm for the months ahead — mending fences, checking shelters, and stacking logs for the fire. The silage challenge means extra planning this year, but resilience is part of farm life. Every season brings its lessons, and autumn teaches us patience, adaptability, and gratitude for what we do have.
Despite the difficulties, autumn remains one of the most beautiful times of year. Walking through the fields with leaves crunching underfoot and woodsmoke drifting on the breeze reminds us why we love this life. Farming is never without its challenges, but the rewards of living and working so closely with the land outweigh them every time.
Autumn escapes
For our future glamping guests, autumn is one of the most magical times to experience the countryside. Picture crisp morning walks with leaves crunching underfoot, spotting red kites soaring overhead or squirrels gathering nuts in the woods.
Later, you can return to your cosy pod, light the firepit, and wrap up under a blanket with a hot drink as the stars come out. With owls calling in the distance and woodsmoke drifting through the air, it's the perfect season to slow down and connect with nature.
